The lancer, the leader’s foil. The lancer is the second in command of the team and will take charge when the leader can’t. But the main thing that the lancer has to do is serve as the leader’s foil. They challenge the leader and while this seems like someone that you may not want on the team it is vital because the leader may be focused on the big picture forgetting to be flexible. The lancer could be just someone who has a different code then the leader while still wanting the same goal, or even be a former enemy who became a teammate. While the lancer will always seem like a second hand character a well written one will have a clear personality and goes against the leader in a way the progresses the leaders thinking, while not harming the group.
